Land Based Studies at R.E.A.L.

Land Based Studies at R.E.A.L. Education offers vocational provision for learners of all ages.

Key Stage 2 and 3 learners are offered nurture days where they can build up their confidence and social skills to get them ready to move on to curriculum groups. The learners carry out a range of different tasks from cleaning out animals and looking after plants on site, to woodwork projects such as building bird feeders or boxes.

From Key Stage 4, learners can work towards BTEC Level 1 in Land Based Studies. This covers a range of different units encompassing animal care, horticulture, health and safety and maintenance of equipment on site. This qualification can often lead to a career within the horticulture or animal care industries.

Based on the Sutton-In-Ashfield/Pinxton border (just off junction 28 of the M1), the site has a 48 foot polytunnel (providing a dry space outside regardless of the weather) where learners can help to plant up hanging baskets, sow seeds, complete woodwork projects and harvest produce.

The site also has a vast array of different animals, including a 5 foot anery corn snake called Boris, two large flocks of poultry and also Ramone the cockerel! It also has a working kitchen facility that helps to educate learners with the concept of ‘seed to plate’, encouraging them to try new and healthy foods.

Ali Stothard-Brown, Provision Manager said: “The environment at Land Based Studies is amazing – it’s a relaxed open space, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable and there is always something to do!
