R.E.A.L. Adventures!

R.E.A.L. Adventure, the outdoor pursuit arm of R.E.A.L. Education, leads exciting activities in the Peak District and surrounding areas.

Licensed by the Adventure Activities Licencing Authority (AALA), R.E.A.L. Adventure is certified safe to operate adventurous activities for learners, schools, and private and corporate groups. Activities include climbing, caving, water sports, bushcraft, forest schools, navigation, mountain biking and much more.

The provision is an amazing resource for R.E.A.L. Education learners to have access to. Activities can be part of a structured course (such as a BTEC qualification), the R.E.A.L. befriending service, or as a confidence building activity.

The team have recently welcomed two new members of staff (Helen Taylor-Housley and Dave Treagus), and run groups every day of the week.

Monday’s group are working towards a teamwork qualification – the focus is on the group coming together to solve problems and really hones in on communication skills. Activities include caving, shelter building, mountain biking and climbing.

Tuesday’s R.E.A.L, Adventure group are undertaking the Bronze National Navigation award. So far they have been orienteering, geocaching on bikes, have completed a 13km walk, and have used radios to locate first aid scenarios.

Wednesday’s group are super-keen cavers and are learning the skills involved to lead a group underground, whilst also learning about the history of caving and mining. They have completed many trips underground as well as visits to mining museums.

Thursday’s group is aiming to complete an indoor climbing award. The group also take part in some caving as a different slant to learning the indoor rope work.

Friday’s group focuses on adventure as a reward for good behaviour. A recent trip involved learners mountain biking at Hicks Lodge.

Helen Taylor-Housley, R.E.A.L. Education Adventure Group Tutor said: “It’s a really exciting time at the moment as we are getting lots of new learners through and are in talks about creating our first adventure nurture group. We are also hoping to gain our very own bit of forest locally, so we can start to offer forest schools and bushcraft!

“All our activities are designed to develop learners’ confidence, as well as their communication and life skills. We have spaces during the week for group-ready learners who would like some adventure!”
