The solution-focused approach

A solution-focused approach is one that concentrates on the strengths people bring to a situation, and emphasises the importance of constructing solutions rather than analysing problem.

This means that our role is not to “diagnose” what is wrong with a student, or to find out what is not working, or even who is to blame. Rather, the role is to create a positive relationship with the student, focus on future possibilities, construct a pathway towards positive change and decide upon the first steps that can be taken.
