At R.E.A.L. we understand the importance of phonics and reading and strive to strike a balance between the teaching of skills and reading for pleasure. Our teaching of phonics is applied alongside our use of authentic literacy to enable learners to recognise the importance and value of reading within their lives.
Due to the older age profile of some of our learners, those who require support for reading, spelling and writing through the use of phonics are supported subtly. Learners are praised for application of sounds, not just spelling accuracy. For younger or less able learners, an interactive, practical approach is used. Each child is assessed using our REAL Phonics Tracker, to ensure they are working at the correct phase and they are then taught key writing and reading skills through weekly sessions that use a “review, teach, practise and apply” approach.
